The Briard or Chien Berger de Brie, is the oldest French sheepdog, having originated in the 12th century. This dog appears in many tapestries of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Back then, he was a fearless fighter and a defender of the family and any farm animals against wolves and theives. He has evolved today into a peacefull dog who is content to keep herds and flocks of protected and also guard any farm property. The standard today was established by Les Amis du Briard, a society formed in France in about 1900.
The Briard is a wiry and muscular dog possessing a long, wavy coat known as a "goat's coat" which gives him the ability to withstand any climate. Slow to learn, he is a very hard and tireless worker. He is placid, but should not be provoked as he will fight to the death and is a one man dog.
Any color is acceptable except white, but dark colors are the best. Usually black or dark or light gray or tawny in color. The coat is long, sightly wavy, stiff and strong. Height is usually 23 to 27 inches for the dog and 22 to 26 inches for the bitch. These dogs weigh 75 to 80 pounds while the females weight a little less at 70 to 75 pounds.
