The Saint Bernard dog got it's name from the monk Bernard de Menthon and from the Hospice of the St. Bernard Pass in the Swiss Alps. However, there is no evidence that the breed existed during the time of the monk's life. In the hospice, the first record of the dog was made in 1774. The dog was developed to find the trails and warn people of treacherous footing. Many of us have seen the painting by British painter Sir Edward Landseer depicting the St. Bernard fighting his way through snow and rain with a little key of brandy tied to his neck. No one knows the real story of his origin. Some say he had Tibetan ancestors while others believe he came from central Asia.
A St. Bernard expects to be treated well and this includes plenty of kindness, respect and affection. He will return the favor to the whole family. A great dog for children, he is gentle, warm, and has no signs of malice or visciousness. The St. Bernard is a very loyal and devoted dog.
This breed can withstand the coldest climate and roughest storm. He never loses his sense of direction and appears to understand the upcoming weather. He is truly an outdoors dog and not for the apartment.
The color is white with red, or red with white. and with a white chest, feet, and the tip of the tail. The coat is very dense and short haired, lying tight to the body. The dog reaches 27 to 29 inches in height while the female reaches 25 to 27 inches. Dogs weigh 155 to 170 pounds while the female reaches 140 to 160 pounds.
