The Welsh Corgi, Cardigan is one of the most mysterious breeds in the world. We know little, but it appears that the first came to Wales in about 1200 B.C. with the Central European Celts. There, he was used as a cattle dog. Many centuries later, the Cardigan Corgi was crossed with native herding dogs and Dachsunds to develop the cattle driving dog we know today. The dog obtained his name from the county of Cardiganshire and the last name from the Welsh cor (dwarf) and gi (meaning dog).
The Corgi is one of the smallest working dogs and an intelligent, hard working, and tough dog who loves to work with sheep, horses and cattle. He will kill any vermin he can. This dog lives longer than most other dogs and is very healthy and able to withstand hot and cold. Suspicious of strangers, he is a one man dog and does not tolerate cats or other stray dogs.
The color is red, brindle, black and tan, black and white, or blue merle. The coat is short, thick, and hard. The dog reaches a height of 11 to 12 inches and the female is 11 to 12 inches. The dog weighs 20 to 25 pounds while the female weighs less at 15 to 20 pounds.
